A Boeing 737 jet powered by a blend of petroleum-based fuel and sustainable biofuel took off from Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, marking an important milestone for sustainability in the airline industry. However, according to biofuel policy expert Deepak Rajagopal (UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and Luskin School of Public Affairs, department of Urban Planning), “we are very, very far from meeting the global transportation needs with biofuels because so much fuel is consumed.”
