The stigma associated with mental illness is damaging to both the individuals experiencing mental illness and the wider population. Thomas B. Strouse, MD, medical director of the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA, asserts that the stigma associated with mental illness may be lessened by: understanding the biological basis, sharing personal experiences, attending events that promote awareness, and correcting jokes or misinformation from our peers.
