UCLA launches new incubator focused on environmental narratives

The Animal Land installation uses video projections to generate synthetic animals, native to each geographical location, that are devoid of natural context.

LENS—the Laboratory for Environmental Narrative Strategies—will launch on October 20 as part of the final day of UCLA’s Earth Now: Earth 2050 symposium. Co-Founder Allison Carruth, a professor of English at UCLA, describes the program as “an incubator for innovative questions that cross between the humanities, social sciences and environmental science.” LENS goals include breaking down academic silos, integrating narrative and storytelling with the research process, and instructing a new generation in environmental thinking, science, leadership, and storytelling.
