Voters approve historic stormwater collection measure in Los Angeles County

November 11, 2018

On November 6, 2018, Los Angeles voters approved Measure W, a stormwater collection measure that imposes a parcel tax on private property owners to generate funds for stormwater collection infrastructure. The measure, which required a two-thirds majority to pass, will generate approximately $300 million annually.

According to Sustainable LA Grand Challenge leader Mark Gold, local stormwater collected through Measure W funded-infrastructure could meet one third of Los Angeles County’s water needs – a huge step towards realizing 100% local water.

Funding from Measure W will also protect marine ecosystem health by collecting dirty stormwater for reuse before it drains into the ocean, contaminating beaches, and devastating marine wildlife. A critical step to enhance ecosystem health.
