UCLA Grand Challenges referenced in Chronicle Review article

The UCLA Grand Challenges program was referenced in a Chronicle Review piece written by Nicholas Lemann (professor of journalism and dean emeritus at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism; director of Columbia World Projects). Other campuses referenced included Georgia Tech, University of Minnesota, Texas A&M, and Indiana University.

Lemann advocates for nurturing grand challenge programs given their unique position to “…direct scholarly knowledge outside the university in the hope of making a difference in the here and now.” He argues that this ability, along with the cross-sector and multi-disciplinary nature of such programs, signify an important paradigm shift for university research.
