Rebecca Shipe, instructor for the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP), received the Faculty of the Year award at this year’s virtual Green Gala, an annual event from UCLA Housing’s Team Green. Shipe was honored for her work mentoring the program participants and supporting their contributions to the university and community’s sustainability efforts.
“Having worked with Dr. Shipe for three years, both as a research scholar and a project consultant, I can say without hesitation that her teaching has prepared me to be a sustainability researcher,” said Rowan Baker, a URSP alum.
After being nominated by several students, Shipe was chosen by student committees comprising members of Team Green, UCLA ResLife, and the UCLA Sustainability Office.
Since arriving at UCLA in 2002, Shipe has taught introductory courses in ecology, evolution and genetics, and has conducted research in biogeochemistry, ecology and physiology. In addition to her research and teaching responsibilities, Shipe has served as the instructor of the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program for the past four years.
“It is truly my privilege to work with these students as they become immersed in the research process and prepare to become leaders in the field of urban sustainability,” Shipe said.
