University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Vice President for Research Chris Brown and Director Lee Moradi visited the UCLA campus on July 16, 2018. They took a closer look at how UCLA is approaching grand challenges and were led on a whirlwind tour by Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research & Executive Director for UCLA Grand Challenges Michelle Popowitz, JD, MPH. Their tour included meetings with the UCLA Depression Grand Challenge, UCLA Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, and the UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge.
UAB is implementing a grand challenge program of their own and using UCLA as a model. Therefore, VPR Brown and Director Moradi met with leaders of UCLA Grand Challenges to discuss topics including: how teams are organized and staffed, partnerships with campus and external stakeholders and how those relationships are defined and memorialized. Grand Challenges leaders and staff provided insights and lessons learned, sharing about what they wish they would have had known when starting the initiatives and how what they do in in their roles within UCLA Grand Challenges is different from anything they’ve been a part of previously.
