UCLA Grand Challenges referenced in Chronicle Review article

The UCLA Grand Challenges program was referenced in a Chronicle Review piece written by Nicholas Lemann, professor of journalism and dean emeritus at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and director of Columbia World Projects. Other campuses referenced included Georgia Tech, University of Minnesota, Texas A&M and Indiana University.

Lemann advocates for nurturing grand challenge programs given their unique position to “…direct scholarly knowledge outside the university in the hope of making a difference in the here and now.” He argues that this ability, along with the cross-sector and multi-disciplinary nature of such programs, signify an important paradigm shift for university research.
