UCLA Grand Challenges referenced in new report from Luminary Labs on ‘State of Open Innovation’

Pamphlets read "The State of Open Innovation." An overlaid quote reads "I was always a believer that what we were dong was transformative … It was enabling us to live up to our values in a new way, and it is now part of our brand as a campus."

On Oct. 2, 2018, Luminary Labs, a strategy and innovation consulting firm in New York City, released a report titled State of Open Innovation.  Luminary Labs approached nearly 100 private sector, government, and nonprofit organizations to understand why organizations are investing in open innovation, how they are doing it, and what’s next.

Luminary Labs gathered and analyzed results from a survey administered earlier in 2018 to build the report. From the 98 organizations surveyed, 11 leaders were contacted for a follow up interview, including Michelle Popowitz (Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Executive Director for UCLA Grand Challenges).

Michelle was interviewed by Luminary Labs’ CEO and Founder, Sara Holoubek, and Managing Editor, Jessica Hibbard, earlier this calendar year. The firm was interested in the techniques used to develop the Grand Challenges – categorizing the practices of tapping a collective intellect to pursue new solutions to complicated problems as “open innovation.”
