Michelle Popowitz (UCLA Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Executive Director for UCLA Grand Challenges) joined an esteemed panel to discuss Identifying and Solving Grand Research Challenges at the 2015 APLU Council on Governmental Affairs Annual Meeting.

Marjorie A. Duske (Director, Science and Technology University of California), Casandra Rauser (Project Director, Sustainable LA Grand Challenge) and Michelle Popowitz (Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Executive Director for UCLA Grand Challenges) made the trip out to NORDP’s 7th Annual Research Development Conference in Bethesda, Maryland to lead a panel about UCLA’s Grand Challenge Research Initiatives.

Cristin Dorgelo presented about the White House Grand Challenges Initiative at the 2014 NORDP Conference in Portland, Oregon. Cristin was the assistant director for Grand Challenges at the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President.

President Obama launched the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative, a bold new research initiative designed to revolutionize our understanding of the human brain. UCLA’s Chancellor Gene Block, Professor Kelsey Martin (Interim Dean, David Geffen School of Medicine; Professor, Department of Chemical Biology & Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences) and James S. Economou (former Vice Chancellor for Research) were present for the launch in Washington, D.C.
